Bicycles for the bush

Transporting heavy loads over long distances can be made much easier by a bush bike modelled after the Chinese rickshaw. Most of the weight is borne by one or two wheels rather than by someone's shoulders. These devices, which are easily manufactured in small villages, could play an important role in local development efforts if they were better known. Apart from lightening the daily load (mostly for women) of household and agricultural activities, they are also useful for small businesses and traders. Both hand-made and industrial manufacturing of bush bikes have already begun in Burkina Faso. A recent brochure on small-scale transportation for development describes in detail the different models that can be adapted for the local needs of developing countries.
