African pests and diseases

A small handbook on the most common fungal, bacterial, insect and mite problems affecting four major tropical root crops has been published by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). Intended as a pictorial guide for growers of cassava, yam, sweet potato and cocoyam, it includes concise descriptions of the range, pathogens, vector and host for each problem as well as information on the symptoms spread and losses involved, with occasional comments on control methods. The real value of this handbook, however, lies in the use of over 90 excellent colour photographs that should greatly facilitate the correct identification of such problems and thus the prescription of appropriate control measures.
