Hyacinth invasion in Nigeria
The Nigerian government has set up a special committee to deal with the severe infestation of water hyacinth. In the large creek and lagoon complexes of Lagos and Ondo States the weeds are cutting off access to communities which depend on water transport. The water hyacinth has recently spread from Benin to Lagos and is still increasing rapidly. An average of 1,000 tonnes of wet hyacinth per day have been cleared, but this is still insufficient to control its spread.
