AlGDUM assistance to gum

The International Association for the Development of Natural Gum Plants decided to extend scientific and technical assistance to those countries interested in growing gum plants. The association has selected high-yielding species that will be multiplied in vitro so as to set up nurseries more rapidly. Several countries of the Sahel, in particular Mali, are presently trying to rationalize plantations of gum shrubs growing all over the region and to produce gum by increasing the cultivated area. They intend, by doing so, to increase the farmers' revenues and improve soil fertility. Gum plants produce not only wood, leaves and fruits for animal feeding, but also arabic gum which is in high demand on the international market. For more information: AIGDUM 119, Chemin de Croisse B.
