Sheep in the Tropics

One title included in the 'Oxford Tropical Handbook Series' that has stood the test of time is Alan Blake Carles' 'Sheep Production in the Tropics'. Since its publication in 1983 this book has proved an invaluable manual for colleges and universities, students, extension officers and commercial farmers. Carles, a lecturer at the University of Nairobi, has covered all aspects of sheep production including environment, products, breeds, feeding, disease management, structures and equipment in ten coherent chapters. Although no area has been overlooked, more coverage could perhaps have been given to either traditional or indigenous production systems References to these are few and then only apply to Kenya. The same could be said of Caries' treatment of reproduction and genetics two important subject areas which deserve more attention than is given here. Despite these shortcomings, the end result is a valuable guide full of practical advice and many useful tips not previously mentioned in other publications on the subject. There is also an extensive glossary and index. 'Sheep Production in the Tropics' by A.
