Integrated weed control research
With funding from the EEC an integrated weed control project in developing countries will see two research groups join forces for two years: ClRAD's weed biology laboratory (Montpellier, France) and the Tropical Weed Group at Long Ashton Research Station (UK). Several research themes have been chosen. The first deals with the study of the herbicidal effects of certain root excretions which could be used to control some of the more adventitious weeds. One of these, Striga, is receiving particular attention as regards its biology, and integrated weed management techniques because it is currently one of the most difficult weeds to control in both Africa and Asia. New herbicides must be tested in different countries for their effectiveness on the worst weeds This EEC project also includes a training component for about ten researchers from the Third World. It will conclude with the establishment of an international information centre designed to assist weed control programmes in developing countries. A telematic information system on phytosanitation (IPHYTO), which is currently operating in France, will be developed for use in Africa and bilingual technical factsheets on weed control in tropical agriculture will also be produced.
