Eupatorium herbicide treatment

Although the Eupatorium weed, found throughout most African forests, quickly invades clearings it poses few problems to established oil palm plantations because its growth is slow under shady conditions. However once the palm trees are cut down, Eupatorium odoratum quickly springs up and competes with the growth of new palm trees and their companion plants. The germination of its seeds can be prevented by burning; manual weeding requires considerable labour and gives only mediocre results; and herbicides are very expensive After several years of observation at the Me research station in the Cote d'lvoire, CIRAD and IRHO (Research Institute on Oil-producing Plants) propose a treatment which combines several herbicides and enables the eradication of Eupatorium during the first year of replanting. This combined technique has the advantage of considerably reducing the amount of herbicide needed and also requires less clearing and weeding.
