What have we learned from Dr. Alexandre Yersin?

Ceremonies to mark the 150th birthday and the 70th death anniversary of Dr. Alexandre Yersin (1863-1943) have been organized in Viet Nam for 2013. Yersin was a world famous physician and bacteriologist. He spent his whole and dedicated life in Viet Nam. This paper summarizes Dr. Yersin's life and accomplishments with his research work and various activities conducted in Viet Nam. We discuss lessons learned from his lifestyle and works in the context of research and training in the modern public health concept. Finally, we address the challenges in conserving the image of Yersin for future.
