The remarkable life of Dr Alexandre Yersin: impact on medical and health development in Vietnam
Dr Alexandre Yersin (1963-1943) was a Swiss-French physician who spent most of his life and work dedicated to Vietnam. He was a world-famous bacteriologist who discovered the origin of the plague in 1894. This report highlights Dr Yersin’s life and accomplishments and discusses lessons learned from his interdisciplinary works to serve communities in Vietnam. We reflect on how his exemplary life can inspire young people, particularly in health research and development. Hung Nguyen-Viet, a Vietnamese citizen and protagonist in this report, is the co-leader of the animal and human health program at ILRI. He has also worked for Swiss TPH and Hanoi University of Public Health. This report was realized by Stéphane Kleeb and produced by Vitascope Independent Film & Video Productions GmbH. This video is produced in French with subtitles in English and Vietnamese. This report is released on 1 March 2022 on occasion of the 79th death anniversary of Dr Alexandre Yersin.
