Low Carbon Agriculture Project: Phase I: Promoting Development and Low Carbon Emission Agriculture in the Amazon and Atlantic Forest

The Low Carbon Agriculture Project is the result of a Technical Cooperation partnership financed by the British Governments International Climate Fund (IFC), with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa) as its beneficiary. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is the executing agency of the Project, and the Brazilian Institute for Development and Sustainability (IABS) is the institution selected to carry out the administrative and logistical activities of Phase I. The Project also has the support of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) and the Bank of Brazil. In general terms, the project, which has just finished Phase I, focusing on the Amazon and Atlantic Forest biomes, aims to improve the use of land and forests by small and medium-sized rural producers, promote sustainable rural development, reduce poverty, conserve biodiversity and protect the climate. The driving force behind its activities has been investment in the implementation of low carbon emission agricultural technologies, through a variety of economic and socio-environmental actions, in a way complementary to the Plan for Low Carbon Emission Agriculture - Plano ABC, one of the sectoral plans of the National Policy on Climate Change (PNMC).
