Productivity of the corn–grasses association in acid soils of the Colombian piedmont plains (Meta department)

In a degraded pasture of the Piedmont of the eastern plains of Colombia, the corn hybrid ‘Master’ was simultaneously established in association with the hybrid grasses Brachiaria cv. ‘Mulato 1’, Brachiaria brizantha cv. ‘Toledo’, andBrachiaria decumbens. Two N rates (100 and 200 kg·ha-1) were evaluated in the development and production of corn grain and grass biomass. N was applied to corn rows 15 and 35 days after the sowing. Total biomass production at 50, 75, 90 and 140 days after sowing was 7.000, 11.400, 15.500, and 16.000 kg DM·ha-1, respectively. Corn grain production associated with Toledo grass was superior (P< 0.05) with 5.836 kg·ha-1 vs. an average of 5.100 kg·ha-1 obtained with the other grasses. Average available forage during the rainy season was 1.037 kg DM·ha-1 and in the dry season 1.045 kg DM·ha-1. Grazing evaluations with beef cattle during 12 months yielded and weight gains of 505, 335 and 328 kg·ha-1 per year with Toledo, Mulato 1 and B. decumbens respectively, while regional productivity in the B. decumbens degraded pasture was between 85 and 150 kg·ha-1 per year. No differences were found between N rates in forage production or animal gain. The establishment cost of the corn grass association was $2’846.160 (US$1237, 2006 prices) and earnings by corn and meat were of $3’750.000 (US$1630) during the first year. Thus, maize production fully covered renovation costs, and improving productivity because the renovated pasture is more productive in available forage and animal gains that.
