The Implications of Climate Change and Sea Level Rise in the East African Coastal Region: a Study of Kenya.

Kenya has 630 Km coastline. The coastal zone not only sustains, but also contributes significantly to the economic development of the country. The second largest town in Kenya, major port, fisheries projects are located within the Kenyan coastal zone. Thus, any significant sea level rise could have serious and profound effects on the livelihood as well as the well-being of a large proportion of the coastal population. A rise in sea level can cause tidal inundation, initiate or exacerbate coastal erosion, impede coastal drainage and augment saline intrusion. The resulting negative impacts on coastal population in the near term and the entire national economy in the long term, should the projected scenario of sea level rise materialize, are both real and significant. Mindful of the potentially adverse impacts brought about by an accelerated rise in sea level, Kenyan scientists are participating in various international initiatives to set up the process by which people world-wide can understand the problem of climate change and sea level rise and the implications it endangers to humanity as a whole.
