The Nyali, Bamburi And Marina Fisher Folk Environmental Awareness Workshop, 6-7th February 2008, Milele Beach,Mombasa.

The fisher folk environmental awareness workshop took place on th~. 6th -7th February 2008 at the Milele Beach Hotel. The workshop comes as a follow up of the I Exchange and Exposure workshop on Marine Ecosystems and Sustainable Management held in July 2007 in Mombasa. Some of the key issues that this awareness workshop intended to address are use unsustainable fishing gear, Marine reserve legislation and conflict of legislations, relationship between KWS and the fishing community and institutional collaboration. A total of 24 fisher folk participated drawn from Mombasa, Malindi and Kisite. On the first day two presentations were made on: 1) Fisheries and Marine Park Laws and Regulations and; 2) Co-Management and role of Beach Management Units. On the second day participants engaged in group discussion 1) fishing gear used in the reserve; 2) environmental, social and economic problems that promote unsustainable use of marine resources and 3) solutions to these problem. From the discussion an action plan was formulated to address some of the immediate concerns. Participant agreed as a way forward that further meetings by KWS, Fisheries and the BMU to be conducted to finishes up with a complete action plan that will address the remaining issues raised.
