Seychelles tuna bulletin : third quarter 1994
Data used to generate the Tables and Figures presented in this report are based on logbook returns from the fishing vessels. Readers should, therefore, be aware that figures presented in this report are likely to change in future publications of the Tuna Bulletin once all the data relating to the quarter being reported on becomes available. The initial estimate for the total WIO purse seine tuna catch for the first nine months of 1994 is 176,216 Mt. However, this figure may also be^ revised upwards when trips starting in the third quarter of 1994 and finishing in the fourth quarter are included in the next quarterly Tuna Bulletin of 1994. This compares with 203,797 Mt caught in the first nine months of 1993. Some 2,532 days were fished in the third quarter of 1994 compared to 3,712 in the third quarter of 1993. Relative to the third quarter of 1993 this is mainly due to a considerable drop in the number of fishing days for the Japanese (from 513 to 0) and Russian purse seiners (154 to 0; see Table 7.0).The mean catch per unit effort in the third quarter was 20.34 Mt/fishing day. This compared with a mean CPUE for the third quarter of 1993 of 19.31 Mt/fishing day. Skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis) comprised 66% (33,985 Mt of 51,512 Mt) of the total catch for the third quarter of 1994, a proportion which is slightly higher to the 1993 third quarter figures (41,610 Mt of 71,671 Mt). Yellow fin (Thunnus albacares) comprised 17% (8,961 Mt of the third quarters catch compared to 31% (22,526 Mt) in the equivalent quarter of 1993. Readers should be aware that this catch composition is NOT scientific. It is based on the assessment of the fishermen who write the fishing log and maybe biased.For the current year, the most busy month for transshipment at Victoria was September when during 30 transshipment operations 23,047 Mt was transshipped. Transshipment for the third quarter totaled 44,401 Mt during 69 transshipment operations. This represents an average of 622 Mt per vessel transshipping, by 23 purse seiners. In the same period last year 51, 903 Mt was transshipped during 93 transshipment operations, by 31 purse seiners. This represents 558 Mt per vessel transshipping. It should be noted that the figures in Table 3 represent the transshipment of vessels whose trips ended in the month indicated NOT the actual month of physical transshipment of the catch. Maps 1 and 2 show the geographical distribution of the purse seine catch in the WIO for the whole of 1993 and the quarter being reported upon, respectively. The area of the circle plotted in each one degree square is in proportion to the catch. In the third quarter of 1994, the catches were more concentrated off the coast of Somalia than anywhere else in the region. Interested readers are referred to the two previous quarterly bulletins to see more clearly the shift in the main fishing grounds between the three quarters.
