Alternative Fangmethoden aus der Sicht der Fischereiforschung

Fishing gears are applied in both commercial fishing and fisheries research. In both cases the majority of fishing gear used are trawl nets. However, trawl nets are not suitable for all tasks of fisheries research. On the other hand, tests of alternative gear and methods in fisheries research did not prove satisfoctory. Trawl nets, in particular bottom trawls, in commercial fishery are said to have detrimental effects on the marine environment as well as insufficient selectivity on target and by-catch species. Commercial fisheries trawl nets in use in the Baltic Sea have only little detrimental impact on benthic organisms. Alternative ecosystem-friendly fishing gear such as fish traps are at present unable to replace trawl nets. Options are presented that reduce the negative impacts on the marine environment even further. Changes in trawl nets (big-sized mesh in front of lower panel of semi-pelagic trawls, top reduced trawls) can reduce by-catch. Improvements of ground gear, clump weights and trawl doors can reduce the negative impacts on the sea bed even further.
