Índice microbiológico para evaluar el estado trófico de las aguas de la plataforma SW cubana

There are different microbiological indexes to evaluate the trophic state of inland and coastal waters based on the direct relation between the concentration of organic matter and the heterotrophic bacteria. These indexes are valuable; however, as they were determined starting from data collected in tempered latitudes, if they are applied to tropical regions where heterotrophic bacteria concentrations are usually higher, the results can be underestimated. The objective of the present work is to elaborate a quantitative index to evaluate the trophic state from microbiological data collected in waters of the SW Cuban shelf. For this purpose, values of concentrations of heterotrophic (HB) and sulfate-reducing (SR) bacteria obtained in waters of SW Cuban shelf were collected from 1981 to 2000, applying similar culture conditions and methodologies. It was defined the route of the variables concentration of HB and SR respectively, as well as, the rank of the samples. In order to subdivide the route of the variable HB it was used the scale proposed by Frontier and for SR a frecuence analysis was made. The stations corresponding to each interval were located according to the values of concentration of HB (UFC/mL), and in the case of reefs, the SR concentrations (NMP/100 mL) were also considered. The trophic characteristics of each station were analyzed, according to the information available in Literature, and the trophic categories oligotrophic, mesotrophic, mesotrophic with tendencies to eutrophic, and eutrophic were defined.
