Emergency water hyacinth reduction programme: project findings and recommendation. Draft terminal report

Uganda's rich hydrological or water resources cover over 18% of the nations' surface area. The waters are an important source for tlsh. National fish production is estimated at 220,OOO mt in 1996 valued at over Ushs 100bn. This fish production is mainly undertaken by small scale artisanal fishermen that fish the shallow waters of Lakes Victoria, Kyoga, Albert and Albert Nile. They use small canoes, a few gill nets and muscle power hence are limited to the shallow water.unfortunately as a result of the spread of water hyacinth since its first sighting in 1987, most of the shallow waters are frequently covered by the weed. Large mobile mats frequently interfere with fishing. The weed often blocks the fishing grounds, makes fish landing points out of use for variable time periods. This renders the small fishermen unemployment in such cases resulting in attendant socio-economic problems.
