Study of fisheries contribution to income and employment

Uganda has a population of 16.6 million people (MPED, 1991) of whom 90%live in rural areas with major occupation being peasant agriculture. Overthe years several, changes have been happening to the people's income and opportunities for employment in both the informal and formal sector of the economy. Within the rural economy, incomes. from agriculture, the main source for rural population, have' declined as result of the collapse in the export markets for the main crops, namely coffee and cotton. On the domestic market, the two decades of economic decline in Uganda has , seen a collapse' in the local marketing machinery for all the crops, to the disadvantage of the producers. Opportunities for profitable' employment in the agriculture sector has, therefore, been greatly reduced.
