Identificación y detección de la actividad antimicrobiana de cepas de bacterias aisladas de la Zona Exclusiva Económica al sur de Cuba.

In this paper, we report the isolation and identification of 45 marine bacterial strains from waters of the Southern Economic Exclusive Zone of Cuba collected during three cruises carried out between 1989 and 1991. The antimicrobial activity was determined by the diffusion plate method using Nutrient agar and agar blocks with the cultures to study. As result, 24 species were identified and 9 resulted new reports for Cuban waters. The highest percentage was obtained for Gram-positive bacteria, particularly spore-forming bacteria (67 %). Arthrobacter, Halorubrum and Lactobacillus genus were new reports for oceanic waters. Antibacterial activity was more represented than antifungal activity among the tested strains. Gram-positive bacteria showed high antimicrobial activity in particular Bacillus genus. S 261 (B. subtilis) and S 299 (B. firmus) strains inhibited 4 of the sensitive strains assayed.
