Elevage larvaire du Mulet lippu (Chelon labrosus) en conditions semi-extensives en mesocosme : croissance et developpement

ABSTRACT In the frame work of a national research program entitled Rearing Technologies for New Marine Species with Aquaculture Potential (Technologies d’élevage de nouvelles espèces marines à intérêt aquacole) an experimental larval rearing of thick lipped mullet (Chelon labrosus) has been performed in mesocosms (semi-extensive conditions). This work presents larval linear and weight growths and their characteristics (specific growth rates, allometric relationship) during the first 30 days of early life history. It also describes the main stages observed during larval development. A sampling of 15 larvae was performed daily during the first 13 days and then each 3 to 4 days until the end of the rearing experiment. The samples were fixed in 2,5% glutaraldehyde phosphate buffered solution (pH 7.4) and then studied by numerical image analysis. Larvae measure 4.15 ± 0.15 mm at mouth opening and are 5 days old (110° in equivalent days degrees). An initial low growth period is observed from 1st to 16th post hatching day (linear Specific Growth Rate = 1.1% per day). The following period until day 30 is characterised by a significantly more rapid growth (linear SGR = 7.2% per day). This change in growth seems to be related to the beginning of metamorphosis as suggested by its concomitance with caudal notochord flexion and analysis of allometric relationships. At 30 days post hatching, the larvae are in an advanced metamorphosing stage, measure 14.5 ± 0.9 mm, show well developed fins and have their grey pigmentation.
