On determination of heavy metals in suspended substances in the waters of the Don River

The content of suspended forms of heavy metals in waters along with the established standards of environmental safety (MPC of dissolved forms of metals) is important for monitoring the pollution of surface water bodies. A method of atomic absorption determination of metals in suspended solids isolated by filtering a water sample through a membrane filter with a pore size of 0.45 μm has been developed. Preliminary sample preparation consists in the treatment of a filter with a precipitate of nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide by heating in a microwave field in hermetically sealed vessels, which significantly reduces the analysis time and minimizes the loss of the metals to be determined. The technique is certified and tested on the water of the water bodies of the Don Basin.
