Determination of Heavy Metals (Zn, Cu, Cd, Pb, Hg) caviar and muscle tissue in Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus) and Stellate sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus) in Southern Caspian Sea

Heavy metal (Zn, Cu, P b, Cd and Hg) concentrations were determined in muscle tissue and caviar in Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus) and stellate sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus) in the southern Caspian Sea (between Torkeman and Astara Ports). Samples were collected from 139 A. stellatus and 118 A. persicus specimens caught at 18 catch stations located in the five fishery zones in the study region during 1998-1999. Samples were analyzed using Atomic Absorption (with .flame) for Pb, Cu and Zn and cold vapor (flameless) for Hg determinations. The mean age for fishes studied was 17.6 for A. persicus and 11.9 for A. stellatus. Mean concentrations of heavy metals in muscle tissue and caviar in A. persicus were as follows: Zn, 26.9 and 65.9: Cu. 1.8 and 4.2; Pb, 0.61 and 0.111; Cd, 0.061 and 0.005 gg g-l dry weight and Hg. 0.06 and 0.007 gg g- wet weight, respectively. In A. stellatus the mean heavy metal concentrations •in muscle tissue and caviar were Zn, 27.4 and 57.8; cu, 164 and 4.85: Pb, 0.481 and O.112; Cd. 0.059 and 0.005 dry weight and Hg, 0.05 and 0.008 1.cg g- wet weight, respectively. The maximum concentrations of the five heavy metals determined in muscle tissue and caviar in the two species studied were lower than the international maximum permissible levels declared for them for human use.
