A study on status of exploting stocks of Ornamental fishes

This final report is an outcome of a study on biodiversity and stock estimating of Ornamental fishes in Larak Island as a sample of Islands which have corals in their waters in the Persian Gulf. The study was based on sampling by pots and handline hooks and underwater fim. Fourty-three species of ornamental fishes were identified of which 20 species were obtained by fishing and 35 ones were observed through underwater films. The results showed that Abudefduf vaigiensis , Neopomacentrus cyanomos, Chromis xanthoptrygia were the most abundant ; Chaetodon nigropunctatus , Thalassoma lunare and Parrot fishes were frequent. Amphiprion clarkii , Archamia fucata , Caesio lunaris and Pesudochromis dutoiti were observed very rarely. The sampled specimens of Abudefduf vaigiensis were 322 and this has a great differences with that of other ornamental fishes. The spawning period of A. vaigiensis and E. hemistiktus based on GSR factor were determined Feb-Mars and Apr-May respectively. Fecondity of E. stoliczkae , S. persicus and Scolopsis ghanam were calculated. Lm50 for females of A.vaigiensis obtained 132 mm (T.L).
