Ecological investigation on Vannami (litopenaeus Vannaemi) rearing Ponds in Choebdeh Abadan

This study was carried out due to the increased activity of shrimp farms in Choebdeh- Abadan and the necessity of investigating water quality factors for the optimal growth of cultured shrimp, as well as determining the pollution load into the environment. In this investigation, 14 stations were determined on the river, water canals, shrimp ponds, and outlet drainage. Sampling was done from two stations on the river during one year (from April to March 2013) as well as on the water canals and adjacent ponds (from June to August 2013). Some parameters such as water temperature and pH were specified in the field by portable multiparameter (Hach), and the others were assayed based on standard methods in the laboratory. Concentrations of heavy metals in water were measured via polarography (797 VA Computrace) after adjusting the pH. Filtered and fixed the samples, identifying and counting of planktons was carried out by invert microscope. The benthos was obtained by Peterson sampler with a dimension of 15.5*15.5. The samples were washed through a sieve with 500 µm mesh and then fixed in ethanol. Afterward, the samples were examined through a stereomicroscope and calculated based on specimen/ m2. The sediments were burnt in an electrical furnace (550 ◦C) to quantify the amount of organic matter. A series of sieves including 500, 250, 120, 63, and < 63 µm was applied to grade the sediments. The results of physicochemical parameters showed that the most dissolved oxygen and BOD5 were 10.66 and 9.97 ppm, respectively. pH was in the range of 7.5-9. Moreover, the amount of nitrate and nitrite were in the range of 4.86-51.47 and 0-2.05 in wastewater, respectively. The highest level of phosphate was 3.93 ppm. The minimum and maximum amounts of salinity were found in the river (1.95 ppt) and wastewater (61.71 ppt), respectively. The total alkalinity was in the range of 2.57-4.5 meq/l. The results illustrate that the amount of pH, dissolved oxygen, BOD5 and phosphate in the discharge of Vannemi shrimp farms were lower than limit and wastewater standard. It also detected that the concentration of heavy metals was in the permissible limit. The observed phytoplankton in water canals included in five class of Chlorophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Dinophysea, and Cyanophyceae, respectively, by a frequency percentage of 82.68, 15.08, 1.54, 0.59 and 0.12%. On the other hand, three classes of Cyanophyceae, Euglenophyceae, and Bacillariophyceae were present in shrimp ponds at a frequency percentage of 72.81, 18.06 and 9.13 %. The maximum abundance of identified zooplanktons belonged to copepod with 88%, while the Crustacean including Cirripedia with 11% and protozoan including Tintinidae with 1% were in lower level. Moreover, Rotifers were in the least frequency percentage of the zooplankton community. During the study period, seven species of macrobenthos belonging to Unionidae, Dreissenidae, Veneridae, Sphaeriidae, Physidae, Naididae and Tabanidae were identified. Among these families, the Sphaeriidae showed the highest number of 2552 specimen/ m2.
