Ethyl methanesulfonate - induced seedcoat color mutants in Phaseolus vulgaris L.

Germinating seeds of a high yielding black bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivar were treated with O (con trol), 0.0625, 0.125, 0.25 and O .5% (v/v) buffered ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) solutions with the purpose 01' exploring the possibility 01' inducing seedcoat color mu tations. The highest frequency of mutations was induced by 0.25% EMS. The results indicate that EMS-induced genetic modifications can readily change the seedcoat color 01' the cultivar used to different hues of brown.
