New subspecies of Oenothera deltoides endemic to California
We recognize an additional Oenothera deltoides subspecies, a short-range endemic that occurs on scattered wind-blown sand deposits on the eastern Antioch Dunes sand sheet in the San Francisco Bay-Delta region of California, USA. With the goal of providing clarity to managers of listed species and better understanding the diversity of the California flora, we addressed the puzzle of O. deltoides by combining range-wide surveys with modern genomic tools. We describe the proposed subspecies, its ecology and distribution, and discuss its conservation. As a short-range endemic with small population size and disappearing habitat, the proposed subspecies Oenothera deltoides subsp. julpunii requires effective conservation and management to persist as a member of the California flora. This bioproject contains raw 100bp SE ddRADseq libraries for O. d. subsp. howellii, O. d. subsp. cognata, and O. d. subsp. julpunii.
