Breeding and selection for seed production at Pamol Plantations Sdn Bhd and early performance of Pamol D X P.

Pamol Plantations Sdn Bhd started dura X pisifera (D X P) hybrid oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) seed production in 1985 at Kluang. Trials were established from 1987 to compare the performance of Pamol D X P with other Malaysian D X P seed sources. Results to date from 4 trials at Pamol show that Pamol D X P was superior for oil yield due to better tenera fruit characteristics and higher oil to bunch ratio, as well as high hybrid purity. Similar results were obtained from a trial carried out independently by another major plantation research organization. Kernel yield of Pamol D X P was lower, although higher oil yield and its higher value maintained the superiority of Pamol D X P for value of total products. Since 1988, virtually all plantings at Pamol Plantations' estates have been with Pamol D X P. Fruit type surveys done in blocks planted up to 1992 showed less than 1% dura palms. Pamol D X P also had a lighter canopy, implying better partitioning of photosynthetic dry matter production. In the long run, this may translate into an even greater yield advantage if ongoing density trials confirm that Pamol D X P can be planted at higher density.
