Introducción de leguminosas y manejo del pastoreo en praderas degradadas de estrella africana (Cynodon nlemfuensis) en el trópico húmedo. Tesis (M.Sc.)
The present study was carried out from November 1987 to May 1988 at CATIE's Tropical Livestock Research Station, in Turrialba, Costa Rica. The main objective of the study was, to determine the effect of legume oversowing in degraded african star pastures and grazing management on pasture availability and nutritive quality. The experimental pastures were evaluated for six consecutive grazing cycles, measuring in each the total and per component biomass availability, as well as the botanical composition. Nutritive value parameters, such as in vitro dry matter dissapearance (IVDMD) and crude protein (CP) were evaluated on December, February and April. The experimental variables were three legumes (A. pintoi, P. phaseoloides, and D. ovalifolium) and two stocking rates (2.0 and 3.0 AU ha-1). A control treatment (without legumes) was also mantained. The experimental design used was a Split Plot in Space and Time with two replications, in which the stocking rate constituted the main plots and the legumes the sub-plots. The legumes were oversown in strips, and the pastures were grazed with a 7/21 rotational system. The oversowing of legumes had a positive effect (p<0,0001) on total forage biomass availability and a deleterious effect on the yield of native grasses and weeds. The availability of african star grass declined with time (p<0,001), but it would appear that this was influenced by flowering and less rainfall that occurred between January and April. The average availability of african star grass was in average very high (4.994 kg MS ha-1), indicating that the stocking rates tested were low.
