Natural crop protection in the tropics letting information come to life

A practical guide for the protection of crops and stored crop products with natural resources, with an emphasis on curative measures, is presented. Some important insect pests of fibre and food crops (cotton, rice, maize, grain legumes, root crops, vegetable crops and fruit crops) as well as some stored products pests for which natural control measures are available, are described. The following sources and methods of natural crop protection are discussed: insecticidal plants, animal substances, inert dusts, ashes, plant oils, baits and traps. Preventive measures described include: cultural control (e.g. through intercropping), conserving and promoting natural enemies, and storage methods for preventive protection of crop produce. A most valuable addition to this revised, second edition of the handbook is the section "Letting information come to life". Case studies from Africa, Latin America and Asia demonstrate important issues, such as: stakeholder participation, motivation and learning processes, and developing partnerships and new forms of co-operation between researchers and farmers. Useful websites and Internet-based databases for integrated pest management (IPM) are listed.
