Holistic pest management

This chapter introduces holistic pest management (HPM), a decision-making system for pest management based on a holistic approach. The concept of HPM is presented and some of its methods are described. Unlike integrated pest management (IPM), the strategy of HPM is to reduce both the population densities of the pest and the vulnerability of the farmer and his farm, while it works to increase the producer’s response capacity. As an example, the holistic management of coffee leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix) is cited.
