Vulnerability of species of trees from the Mexican Caribbean with one map and 2 tables

The present study reports data on distribution, dominance, endemism and degree of vulnerability of 112 tree species present in the forest remnants along the Caribbean coast of northeastern Quintana Roo, Mexico. The coastal area of Quintana Roo degraded the last twenty years mostly due to the accelerated development of tourism, hurricanes and fires of great magnitude. Twenty-one endemic species of trees were recorded, representing 38.8% of the peninsular endemism. Based on distribution, dominance and endemism of the recorded tree species, four degrees of vulnerability are proposed (low, low-medium, medium and high). Following the IUCN criteria only two species (Pseudophoenix sargentii and Trichilia minutiflora) were considered as vulnerable or rare.41.9% of the species present a high degree of vulnerability, followed by the medium degree of vulnerability (40.9%) indicating the urgent need of strategies for the protection of the existing forest remnants.
