The Sphingidae of Chajul, Chiapas, Mexico

The arthropod fauna of "Selva Lacandona" is poorly studied. Though vertebrate and plant inventories are still in progress, preliminary results indicate these forests are extremely species rich. The information presented here is part of an ongoing inventory of the moth fauna of Estacion de Biologia Chajul. Eighty-four species of Sphingidae have been documented, and this accounts for nearly half of the fauna of this family for the entire country. Flight periods are presented for most species. Temperature data explain 52% of the variation in monthly species richness.
