Vulnerabilidad comunitaria a los cambios globales perspectivas desde las comunidades tseltales, Chiapas, Mexico
The ability of a community to cope with and respond to change heavily depends on access to, and control over, key assets that include both tangible capitals (natural, physical and financial) as well as intangible ones (human and social). It also depends on community capacity to address the necessary changes to exploit the changing opportunities. Finding effective strategies for reducing vulnerability is particularly relevant for many indigenous communities that often find themselves constrained in vulnerable states facing the challenge of a dynamic and lively conciliation between tradition and change. In this work we document the work jColtaiwanej, traditional community leaders of Tseltal communities in the Chiapas State (Mexico), to address change. Tseltal societies conserve traditional features in their daily life organization, rituals and celebrations. However, like many indigenous communities in Mexico, they are currently vulnerable to a number of threats: widespread poverty, lack of land, changing lifestyles, acculturation and generation gaps. First, we identify and discuss the concrete factors that shape vulnerability and influence capacity to adapt to change of seven Tseltal communities through primary source material and original empirical data. Then we provide evidence of the collaborative processes that are emerging in these communities: NGO technicians, researchers and the communities' leaders are developing a methodology of work rooted in the indigenous cosmology and based on an endogenous approach. We argue that these processes have the potential to contribute to the wellbeing of communities since they address some of the root causes of the communities' fragility and secure community self-determination.
