Distribución y abundancia de larvas de Strombidae en la Bahía de la Ascensión, Quintana Roo, México

The space-time distribution and abundance of Strombid larvae at Bahia de la Ascensión were studied monthly from August 1990 to July 1991. Sample collection was realized at 15 stations, using a conic plankton net 50 cm diameter and 333 mesh light. Strombus gigas and Strombus raninus larvae were identified, counted, and measured. Highest larvae abundance occurred in August at station 13; 468 larvae corresponded to S. gigas and 26 to S. raninus, while in September four S. gigas larvae were found. In October stations 8 and 13 had one and 65 S. gigas larvae, respectively and two S. raninus larvae were present. No larvae were found the rest of year. Most of veligers corresponded to stage IV of development, with exception of one S. gigas of stage III found in August, and two larvae of stage V, found one in August and other in October.
