A note on performance evaluation of four-disc pulper for coffee

The performance of an electrical four-disc coffee pulper at various speeds (110, 150, and 250 rpm) was studied using arabica coffee (Coffea arabica) fruits. For the evaluation of optimum speed, feed rate, and water requirement, the feed rate of fruits was adjusted from 25 to 45 kg for 110, 35 to 55 kg for 150, and from 50 to 75 kg for 250 rpm. Tests were conducted either without water; with 1, 2, and 3 litres of water; or with wet fruit surface. Separation efficiency was increased by increasing the water flow and reducing the feed rate. The percentage of broken beans increased with the increase in machine speed. At 110 rpm, the highest separation efficiency (98.23 percent) was obtained with a feed rate of 25 kg/minute using 3 litres water/kg of fruit for pulping. At 150 rpm, a feed rate of 35 kg/minute and 3 litres water/kg of fruit gave the highest separation efficiency (98 percent) At 250 rpm, the separation efficiency was highest (97.5 percent) at a feed rate of 50 kg/minute using 3 litres water/kg of fruit.
