Control de malezas en café usando ovinos

The economic advantages, weed control capabilities and levels of plant damage of sheep grazing at low (4.33 sheep units (SU)), variable and high (9.16 SU) stocking rates was evaluated in a commercial coffee plantation in Tachira state, Venezuela during 1994-95. A split-plot design was used in which the main plot was shaded or exposed to 50 percent sunlight, and the secondary plot was subjected to the climatic changes. The weed control and plant damage due to sheep grazing were 45.83, 65.45 and 68.7 percent, and 1.19, 2.74 and 11.06 percent for low, variable and high stocking rates, respectively. There were no weed control differences when the plots were exposed to rain, but the control had greater weed control under the shade regime. No significant differences were observed with regard to the cost, between the traditional weed control techniques and weed control with sheep.
