Organic recycling of coffee pulp in coffee based cropping systems

A trial on mixed cropping of coffee and cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) was conducted at Chettalli, Karnataka, India, which is predominantly a coffee growing area, to study compatibility and recycling pattern of coffee pulp (fruit skin). From every 100 kg of ripened coffee fruits, 23.9 kg of clean coffee and 16 kg of dry pulp or fruit skin were obtained. The chemical composition of dry fruit skin (pulp), comprised K (4.21 percent), N (2.38 percent), Ca (1.07 percent), P (0.55 percent) and Mg (0.42 percent). Substantial quantities of nutrients were obtained from coffee pulp compost, which can be recycled in the coffee-based cropping system to enrich the soil and to substitute for some of the added chemical fertilizers.
