Evolution of expenditures with crop protection and fertilizers for the coffee harvest of 2000-01 in the States of Sao Paulo and Parana

An analysis was carried out of prices of crop protection products and fertilizers for coffee crop in the states of Sao Paulo, and Parana Brazil, in 2000-01. The parity of prices of these inputs with that of prices received for the product was also established, to evaluate the potential of the coffee market in 2000-01. The results showed a decrease in prices of inputs in the period from January to August 2000, however there was a 50 percent increase in the amount of coffee needed to obtain a unit of input, in S. Paulo. The results also showed equally unfavourable prices for Parana coffee farmers, with considerable increases observed in the coffee-inputs exchange relation, with an average increase of more than 50 percent. A fall in international coffee prices was suggested as responsible for this deterioration in the product-input exchange relation.
