Control strategies for coffee leaf rust applying protective and systemic fungicides in Patrocinio, Minas Gerais, Brasil :
An experiment was conducted in Patrocinio, Minas Gerais, Brazil, during 1991-94 to determine the alternative strategies for use of copper oxychloride 50 percent, and to evaluate the doses of triadimenol 6 GR and triadimenol + disulfuton (1.5+7.5) GR, for the control of coffee leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix). In the first cycle, on average, control strategies, using oxychloride were not more efficient than the formulations of the systemic one, although, they overcame them in yield. For the second cycle, the strategies of cupric fungicide use, were superior to the systemic ones, particularly in subplots with 4 applications, where superior yields were observed, even though bigger percentages of the disease persisted. Similar behaviour was observed for the third cycle. In the first cycle, the effectiveness of 0.72 kg triadimenol/ha was verified in the control of the disease. However, the lack of protection of the formulation against Perileucoptera coffella [Perileucoptera coffeella] allowed high defoliation at the end of that cycle. As a result, the plantation presented low levels of the disease in the next agricultural year, due to low productivity of coffee. These results, of disease control, were ratified in the second cycle, without causing impact in the yields, and in a sustained way, ratified for the third cycle. Triadimenol at 0.72 kg/ha was efficient to control the disease, but had no effect on yield increase. For the 3 cycles studied, treatments with the application of triadimenol + disulfoton had the smallest disease levels and highest yields. There was no loss of efficiency in the control of the disease, nor harmful effects of the evaluated doses on the yields.
