Nutrients repartition in the coffee branches, leaves and flowers

The repartitioning of nutrients in coffee (Coffea arabica) branches, leaves and flowers was studied at anthesis during the first reproductive phase in the cultivars Mundo Novo IAC 388-17 grafted on Apoata (4000 plants/ha), and Catuai Amarelo IAC 62 (5000 plants/ha). At flowering, the reproductive branches, comprising 37 and 29 flowering branches for Mundo Novo and Catuai Amarelo, respectively, were collected. The flowers are an important physiological drain of nutrients in coffee, but the extent of this drain varied among the cultivars. Nutrient accumulation by Mundo Novo and Catuai Amarelo was investigated before anthesis, at the beginning of the spring season. The allocation of Mg to the flowers during this time represented 52 percent of the total allocation of Mg to the flowers, leaves and branches, indicating that fertilizer application should be made before anthesis.
