Café e saúde: tres décadas de estudos

Throughout the last three decades, several studies were performed in order to ascertain the relationship between coffee and caffeine consumption and human health. In this study, the effects of coffee and caffeine on human health were reviewed from 1970 until 2002. The time period investigated was classified in decades. From 1970 until 1979, 43.9 percent of the studies reported the relationship between coffee consumption and coronary heart diseases; from 1980 until 1989, 36.2 percent of the studies investigated coffee consumption and the development of different types of cancer; from 1990 until 1999, there was a prevalence (25.0 percent) of studies on cardiovascular risk factors; from the year 2000 on, cancer is again the main object of studies (28.9 percent). In the first decade of this study, several investigators considered only the variable coffee consumption and its influence on human health. Several variables, for example cigarette smoking, alcoholic beverages consumption, body mass, among others were later defined as relevant in such studies. Due to this fact, early results were conflicting and adverse effects to human health were attibuted to coffee. Results of investigatins undergone in the last years suggest that the consumption of coffee and caffeine cannot be considered a risk factor for several diseases among them cariovascular diseases and bladder, pancreas and intestinal cancer. Research developed over the last three decades refutes the theory that coffee represents a risk factor for pregnant women. Furthermore, it has also been observed that moderate coffee consumption is not a risk for the fetus. Recent data indicates that coffee consumption can prevent some types of cancer, directing studies to the natural presence or formation in coffee of compounds with antioxidant, anticarcinogenic and antiteratogenic properties.
