A cultura do café no estado de Sao Paulo, 1995-96

Although the state of Sao paulo, Brazil is a traditional coffee producer, it is no longer the main one. In this paper, census survey data are used to obtain coffee activity and producer profiles, besides a description of the coffee farms. the following conclusions were reached: a) 380 million coffee trees were cultivated in 220,200 hectares; b) the number of trees per hectare has increased from 800 in the 40's to 3300 in the 90's; c) 80 percent of the coffee farms measured from 10 to 500 hectares; d) the use of technology depended strongly on the educational level of the farmers; out of which 25 percent have completed high school or undergraduate studies, responding for 52 percent of the planted area
