Water pollution by coffee processing units and its abatement

Water pollution caused by wet processing of coffee is a burning problem in the coffee producing countries and India is not an exception. Based on the studies carried out, the quantity of effluent produced and load interns of BOD and COD are presented. Construction and operation of two stage biological treatment plant accepted and recommended by Karnataka State Pollution Control Board which is a modification of NEERI model is described. For the benefit of the planting community a general sketch tank dimensions for different quantities of effluents produced and quantity of nutrient additives to be added to different tanks are presented in this article. Case studies on the construction cost of effluent treatment plant (ETP) have revealed that for every 1000L effluent an amount of Rs. 530-600 is needed for construction of ETP with hydraulic retention time of 30 days.
