Performance of CCRI-released arabica selections in the Pulneys in Tamilnadu

To evaluate the performance of CCRI-released arabica selections under North-East monsoon conditions. 12 lines viz SLN.3-4(S.2496). SLN.4(S.2372). SLN.4(S.2467). SLN.5(S.2931). SLN.6(S.2505). SLN.7.2(S.2499). SLN.7.3(S.3708). SLN.8(S.2695). SLN.9(S.2790). SLN.10(S.3827). SLN.11(S.2464) and Cauvery (S.4349) were cultivated at Regional Coffee Research Station, Thandigudi in the Pulneys (T.N.). Data on growth parameters, yield and bean grade were recorded. The various growth parameters such as stem girth, no. of pairs of primaries and bush spread did not seem to influence the yield or bean grade. The six year mean yield showed that SLN.5(S.2931) is most promising for the Pulneys with 771 kg of clean coffee per acre obtained in the experimental block. This material, a cross of Devamachy and S.333, did not require any fungicidal sprays as incidence of leaf rust was very negligible. Yield data recorded at RCRS indicated that, next to SLN.5, SLN.10(S.3827) seemed to be a good performer with average yield of 658 kg clean coffee per acre. However it showed high susceptibility to rust, requiring three sprays of Bordeaux mixture. Yield level in the case of S.795 is around 400 kg per acre in Pulney area and it requires regular Bordeaux sprays. Cauvery (S.4349) appeared to be a good material, particularly for intensive cultivation. Under normal, planting conditions with moderate soil fertility, the 6 year mean yield obtained was 629 kg clean coffee per acres. In the drip irrigation plot (5L/day/plant), the yield was 846 kg per acres. In a shade-free experimental plot of high soil fertility in a valley, the yield reached 1083 kg/acre. In the open intensive care plot with irrigation and adequate fertilizers accompanied by regular fungicidal and nutritional sprays, the 4 year mean yield touched 1572 kg clean coffee per acre. Regular fungicidal sprays were essential to contain leaf rust in Cauvery. With timely fungicidal sprays, SLN.4(S.2372 and S.2467) was also found to perform reasonably well with an average yield of 533 and 445 kg/acre respectively. Without fungicidal sprays, SLN.7.3 yielded an average crop of 641 kg per acre, but very late ripening and lack of uniformity of the population were the disadvantages. In the case of SLN.7.2 (Mean yield: 548 kg/acre) severe incidence of leaf rust and early exhaustion were the problems. SLN.9 showed low average yield of 314 kg/acre at RCRS. However yield levels of 550 to 620 kg/acre has been recorded in this variety in private estates in Pulneys without Bordeaux spray, SLN.3.4, 6, 8 and 11 did not seem to be encouraging
