Technical report on diseases affecting coffee in India - a review :

Control of diseases plays a major role in the management of an estate. Both arabica & robusta coffee are susceptible to fungal diseases. Arabica is more susceptible to diseases than robusta coffee. Bacterial and viral diseases have so far not been reported from India. The important diseases of coffee which occur in India are (1) Leaf rust (2) Black rot (3) Root diseases (four types) (4) Anthracnose (3 types). (5) Berry blotch (6) Brown-eye- spot (7) Collar rot and (8) Kondli disorder. Among them first seven are fungal diseases and the last is due to chemical toxicity. Although research on diseases of coffee in India started as early as 1915, more methodological research was started only in 1925 under the leadership of the late Dr. Leslie C. Coleman. The outstanding research work done by Mr. W. Wilson Mayne, the first Coffee Scientific Officer of the United Planters Association of South India on the discovery of the existence of physiological races of the Coffee leaf rust, its biology and epidemiological aspects and also the spray chedule formulation to control the most important diseases of coffee had become the basic aspects for the subsequent researches on various diseases of coffee. The research work done on the various discases of coffee in India, their history, control, management and prevention are briefed in this review. This will appear in these columms in three parts and this is the first part. The review deals mainly with the major disease of coffee - the Leaf Rust and its control.
