Strategies for a small coffee planter for year 2000 and beyond

The Indian economy started its journey of economic liberalisation and globalisation in 1991 with the advent of the new industrial policy. Around the same time, Indian coffee industry has attracted attention because of a shif in government policy towards marketing Indian Coffee. The introduction of ISQ was the starting point. This supposedly small change had a snowballing effect. The ISQ had become 50 per cent FSQ in a short time. The present mood of the coffee industry appears to be that of a 100 per cent FSQ situation in the near future.* This virtually means a Full Freedom for market forces, both in the domestic and international markets. The two processes of economic liberalisation and full freedom for market forces in coffee industry together at a macro level present a well balanced and synchronised view at the outser. An attempt has been made in this article to probe this view from the micro point of view of an individual coffee grower. This exercise is undertake with a view to generate strategic options for the grower to meet the twin objectives of Survive an Prosper in the free market.
