Integraated input management in coffee based spices multistoreyed cropping system
Cultivation of cattimora (Cauvery) Coffee with high density planting has been gaining an impetus during recent years. During the prebearing period of Coffee, the interspace could be profitably utilised for cultivation of Ginger (second year of planting coffee, 1990-91) and Turmeric (third year, 1991-92), besides raising of banana (first year 1989-90) as initial shade which also provides an early income. Establishment of permanent shade tree species like Silveroak (Gravillia robusta) and Balanji (Acrocarpus fraxinifollius) in the first year of planting coffee (1989-90) itself, could be used as live standards for training pepper when they attain sizeable growth during the 5th year. Thus in this multistoreyed cropping system, shade trees occupy the top most canopy, followed by Pepper, Cattimora coffee, Ginger and turmeric. Gross Income realised upto 4th year from crops like Ginger (Rs. 79800), turmeric (Rs 60525) and Coffe (Rs. 9750) was Rs. 150075 as against the total cost of cultivation of Rs. 105070.3. A net profit of Rs. 45005/ha was obtained from the cropping system. Integrated input management can be very well conceived, practiced, sharing expenditure towards common cultural operations like land preparation and after care operations soil conservation which are labour intensive.
