Una evaluación económica del Programa Nacional de Alimentación Complementarias (PNAC)

This paper presents a cost benefit analysis of the Programa de Alimentación Complementaria PNAC, a large feeding program that has been implemented in Chile for more than 20 years. In the paper PNAC is considered like any other investment program, and its nutritional benefits are measured in terms of the resource saving associated to the changes in the birth weight rate and the income differentials due to the improvement in the desertion and repitence rates induced by the program. Finally, PNAC present value is calculated. Data confirms the rentability of the program as implemented today. (NPV>0), but it also shows that the bulk of the benefits are to be found in the poorest sector of beneficiaries and not in the other groups. This point suggest the possibility of improving the rentability of the PNAC by reorienting it toward that sector
