Mexique, les producteurs de café-gerent leurs usines. II. Résultats économiques et perspectives

For several years now, in the Xalapa region (Mexico), producer groups have been in charge of converting cherry coffee to parchment coffee. The results for the 1992-1993 season show that in addition to an unfavourable national and international context, there are three sets of constraints that make running these groups an extremely tricky business. Fisrstly, inadequate internal organization and somewhat approximative administrative management which adversely affect cohesion within the groups. Secondly, insufficient mastery of the diferent processing stages leads to operating losses as it increases production costs and produces coffee of very inconsistent quality. Lastly, the low volumes processed, combined with inconsistent quality, are a major obstacle to product promotion on lucrative markets. Despite these constraints, the results also show that provided management is improved, organized groups of producers taking charge of processing can be a viable alternative to marketing cherry coffee directly.
