Effect of combined inoculation of VAM and Azospirillum on the growth and nutrient uptake by coffee seedlings

A nursery experiment was conducted to find out the effect of combined inoculation of VAM fungi (Glomus fasciculatum, Gigaspora margarita and Acaulospora laevis) with Azospirillum brasilense (SP.7) on the growth and nutrient uptake by coffee seedlings (cul.Kaveri). The observations indicated that combined inoculation of G. Margarita+Azospirillum significantly increased the shoot length, root length, and total dry weight of the plants, compared with the uninoculated control. The same treatment combination enhanced the VAM colonization of roots to the maximum (44 per cent) compared with the other treatments. Not only the total P uptake by the coffee seedlings was increased significantly by the combined inoculation with G. Margarita and Azospirillum (SP.7), but total N uptake, and uptake of the micronutrients viz. Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn were also increased considerably. The results indicated that use of these bio fertilisers in coffee nursery could enhance the growth and vigour of the seedlings significantly.
